Kyro

Kyro

Meet Kyro, a five year old German shepherd mix. When Kyro came into Raintree, he was very lethargic, weak, dehydrated, and was having episodes of vomiting. Diagnostic tests that we performed on Kyro included abdominal x-rays and bloodwork, but a specific reason for his clinical signs remained elusive. Costs were of concern for the owners, so we attempted to treat symptomatically with medications and a bland diet.

Later that evening, Kyro’s condition continued to deteriorate, so the owners took him to the emergency clinic. By the time he arrived there, he was having seizures and was unable to walk. He soon became comatose. As soon as Raintree opened for business the following morning, we resumed his care consisting of IV fluids and extensive medications. A definitive cause for his clinical signs was still unknown, but an acute toxicity or poisoning was climbing the list of possibilities. What could Kyro have gotten into, or what could someone have given him that could cause these severe clinical signs?

After two days of fluids and medications, Kyro’s condition began to improve. He could sit up for a short while; he drank water and ate a small amount of canned food. Because of the cost of overnight care, Kyro went home each night and came back to Raintree each morning. By the fifth day, Kyro seemed so much better. He ate well and had a lot of his energy back.

Kyro improved each day, but four days later he was back to not eating, being lethargic, and was just not acting himself. It was recommended at that time to do a barium series (x-rays taken while barium sulfate enters the stomach and intestinal tract to help identify any abnormalities.) Kyro’s family had already dug into their savings to fund Kyro’s care, and could not afford any further diagnosis for their beloved family member.

Luckily for the family, Raintree had raised enough money for the Caring for a Lifetime fund, and Kyro became its first beneficiary!! Raintree was able to support the last of Kyro’s treatment including final bloodwork analysis, medications, and the barium series. Within just a few days, Kyro was regaining his energy and returning to the familiar routines he enjoyed around the home with his loving family. Today, two months later, Kyro is back to his normal self, enjoying running around outside, riding with Dad in the truck, and just having a blast being a happy healthy dog. Although his final diagnosis was never determined, Kyro’s recovery has been such a heartwarming experience that wouldn’t have been possible without Raintree’s Caring for a Lifetime Fund.

Thanks SO much to all that donated!
